“Success doesn’t come from what you do occasionally. It comes from what you do consistently.” – Marie Forleo

We’re highlighting three mamas from Fairbanks for this May’s SLAMer of the Month. Each unique in her own way, these mamas share one characteristic – consistency. Each mama started SLAM less than a year ago, and all have surpassed the 100-class mark. In fact, between the three of them, they have attended 409 classes since last summer!

They are a rock-solid part of SLAM Fairbanks. They show up, work hard, and love and support the rest of the tribe. They hold babies, break up toddler disagreements, and keep track of wanderers. We love that they come so often!

This article comes to you in interview/answer form. We asked our mamas the same three questions. Read on for their responses about why these mamas – Callie Donaldson, Katy Giuliani, and Erin Gibson – keep coming back to SLAM:

What brought you to SSM and how has it impacted your fitness and motherhood?

A friend convinced me to do my first free class. I have become stronger and have lost weight to a point where I am happy with my body. Since working out so consistently I have noticed I am happier (which is key when you live in dark nights/days of Alaska.) I have also noticed I am more motivated to get my kiddos outdoors.

What keeps you so consistent?

The transition to a stay at home mom was really tough before SLAM. Having SLAM to attend has just become part of my routine. I also love where my body is at and I want to keep it that way.

What benefits have you noticed from being so consistent in class attendance?

My body is strong and my lifestyle has changed as far as eating habits. It’s also benefited my family as we are eating healthier and getting outdoors a lot. Its all well worth it.

What brought you to SSM and how has it impacted your fitness and motherhood?

I wasn’t always consistent. It took the birth of my daughter and my husband deploying when she was four months old for me to realize I needed something to help me get through the time he was away. I found a friend who jumped head first into the running and workout world with me and we took off from there. I wasn’t doing it just for myself. I was also doing it so one day I could tell my daughter about all the miles she put in with mama everyday. Like usual, the Army moved my friend away and consistency became a lot harder. I tried to keep up our regiment but it wasn’t as fun and as many days a week. Fast-forward four years and a cross-country move to Alaska, and I found the exact consistency I needed again. It took a new friend telling me about this awesome community of moms who meet up and workout together everyday! I was 26 weeks pregnant with our fourth but that wasn’t going to stop me from joining them. Stroller Strong Moms became my place and my children’s place too!

What keeps you so consistent?

Our day-to-day life is never consistent in the military, but knowing we can wake up, go hang out with our friends, and get a great workout helps make our days a lot better. Being consistent at SLAM means I’m always working my muscles and building up the strength and endurance I need to keep up with little kids. Plus those little kids are watching what I do everyday. It’s important to show them healthy habits so they can grow up with the skills to be consistent in their lives. It’s truly why consistency is important.

What benefits have you noticed from being so consistent in class attendance?

It was no surprise to my Slam Sisters that I was back at class within four weeks of baby being born (with doctors approval of course). I was ready to get that consistency back. SLAM isn’t just a workout, it’s tribe of women who don’t judge you as you feed your littles five snacks in a row, they support you on your good days and your bad ones, and it’s a place where our children can make friends. Consistency is so very important and to me that consistency is Stroller Strong Moms!

What brought you to SSM and how has it impacted your fitness and motherhood?

SLAM has been my everything for the past year. I had been involved in other stroller fitness groups off and on over the years and knew I needed to add fitness back into my crazy life. Then after a trip to Vegas with my husband, I noticed that I was exhausted the entire trip from walking and I caught a look at myself in a full-length mirror (not what I wanted to see). But as a mom of 4 kids (9, 7, 2, 2) and working mom (40 hours a month outside of the home) I knew I didn’t have the time or money to go to a gym. I had seen many Facebook posts about SLAM and decided to give it a try. I figured since the first class was free then I had nothing to lose. But after my first class I said, “Sign me up” and never regretted my decision. All of the SLAM moms have become a second family; I couldn’t do motherhood without them. The SLAMfam has been there through a surgery for my youngest, willing to watch my kiddos when I have to work and even feeding my kids during a workout when I forget snacks. My kids have made friends and love their SLAM time too.

What keeps you so consistent?

One of the best things about SLAM is watching my 2-year-old twins doing leg swings and burpees while playing “Stroller Strong.” Realizing I am setting an example of fitness and exercise to be a normal part of our lives, keeps me coming back for more.

What benefits have you noticed from being so consistent in class attendance?

I have been consistently working out for almost a year now with SLAM. The SLAM workouts never disappoint, the Fairbanks instructors bring their all when it comes to making us sweat. I am still working on where I want to be, but am seeing improvements in other areas. Before SLAM I was always at the doctors getting meds, adjustments and/or injections for old injuries, but since SLAM I have been pain free for the most part. I have made lifelong friends that I would have never met anywhere else.

Sometimes in the morning when I don’t feel like going to SLAM, I remind myself of the benefits and head out with my two-year-old twins in my double jogging stroller. I have never regretted a SLAM workout.

Here at Stroller Strong Moms – Fairbanks, we are so thankful to have these women as a regular part of our tribe. They are uplifting, hard working, encouraging, and so loving to us mamas and our littles. We are a better tribe because of them and stay inspired because of their commitment.
