I will never forget the first few times Robin came to class. I was seriously worried she was going to throw up. She mentioned it a few times and we discussed alternative breakfast choices, but ultimately she wasn’t used to the high intensity of SLAM and I thought for sure she might not last. But last she did, and really, she thrived. We’ve been lucky to have this mama for over a year now. She makes everyone laugh with her “that’s what she said” comments, always tells the new gals how things used to be at her first few classes, and she genuinely tries to make all of the events that she can, even as a working nurse. She may be running her first official 5k this weekend, but she forgets she ran an unofficial one with us in March as well, and she crushed it!! We look forward to seeing the continued strength in this sweet and fun mama!

Hey everyone!!  I’m Robin and I’ve been a member of SLAM Southern Pines since August of 2017.  I’m originally from Texas and met my husband after college while he was still active duty.  We were set up by a mutual friend.  After getting out of, and then back into, the Army, we moved to Ft. Bragg in October of 2015.  I spent my whole life in Texas and this was my first move with the Army.  I had a bit of a hard time making friends, which was especially obvious after I had my sweet baby in December of 2016.  I was definitely looking to meet a group of women who were supportive and dealing with motherhood and life in general just like me.
I hadn’t been motivated to work out since I quit playing sports in high school.  I felt like so many women do after having a baby; I was self conscious and looking to feel confident again.  I knew I needed to do something but I didn’t think I would have time since I had a baby to look after.  That’s when a friend told me about the SLAM grand opening in Southern Pines.  I went to my first class and it truly kicked my butt.  It was another week or two before I found the nerve to go back. I only went once a week for the first few weeks and I felt like I was going to throw up every time.  But I was lonely and determined to make it through a class without quitting.  Now I SLAM 2 to 3 times a week and feel terrible when I miss a class.  I basically try to schedule my week around class, as well as the other events our awesome leader Brittany Hampton organizes for us.  And this month I will be running in my first 5K, which is something I always wanted to do but never thought I could.
I am so thankful for this amazing group of women and SLAM Southern Pines.  Life is truly happier and healthier because of them.  I also truly appreciate the privilege of being SLAMer of the month.  It is recognition I don’t deserve but am so thankful for!!!
